In the 1800s Belle Meade was a plantation known internationally for its thoroughbred horses. Development transformed the plantation into a residential neighborhood in the early 1900s. Sales were helped by the relocation of the Nashville Golf and Country Club in 1914 (currently the Belle Meade Country Club). In the 1920s the gift of Percy Warner Park, adjoining Belle Meade, guaranteed the desirability of the neighborhood with its hundereds of acres of protected park land. The city of Belle Meade was incorporated in 1938 and has its own police force, along with other special services.
